So, I have been on a low calorie diet for about 3 months now and I've lost 50 lbs. I'm honestly only taking in 700-1000 calories a day. I know it's super low, but I don't really feel like it's having a negative effect on me in any way. I'm wanting to start building muscle, but I'm afraid if I eat more, I'm just gonna gain more fat because I would be intaking more calories. Is this something I should be afraid of? Or will all the food go directly into my muscle?

Congratulations on such a big weight loss - must be making a huge difference to you in so many ways!

I lost a similar amount over a similar period, and I too pondered the whole muscle-building issue.  My concerns arose not just in respect of my appearance, but also of not wanting to lose too much muscle bulk because that in turn would make my base calorie requirement drop, making it more difficult to keep the weight off.

After doing a fair bit of research on this, I came to the conclusion that I just had to lose the weight first and then look to build muscle afterwards.  I did do strength training during my weight loss period and I maximised my protein intake as much as I could (no supplements or anything like that - just meats, fish, milk, eggs, etc.), but I realised that the best I could hope for was to maintain my current muscle as much as I could rather than realistically expect to actually increase muscle bulk.  I think I did quite well I this respect, although I have always found it very easy to bulk up on muscle due to my personal metabolism / biology / whatever - others might find it more difficult.

After I lost my weight, I ate more and consumed more calories and kept up the strength training and the muscle soon started building up.  I think that it is true to say that if you insist on losing weight at such a fast rate (as I did too) then you have to accept that it is a virtual biological certainly that some of what you lose will be lean muscle.  I don't think I lost too much though.  It can be difficult to tell in my experience - as all of the padding fat melts away, the muscle that has always been underneath is revealed and this can perhaps give the illusion that you are "buffing up" rather than losing muscle.  My wife and kids certainly all thought so as I lost my weight!

I hasten to add that I was not "bodybuilding" in the true sense - I have always just wanted a decent physique rather than developing huge muscles.  For that, I understand that you really need to consume a lot of calories, and accumulating excess fat while doing this is much harder to avoid.

I am no nutritionist, sports trainer or anything like that - I can only tell you what I managed to find out for myself and what seemed to work for me personally, based on my own body and biology.  Your mileage may vary, as they say!

Hope this of some use to you - the very best of luck!!
