Hi There,
I would like to share my story with you all. Firstly, I am not a gereral book reader, I can read ! Just never been able to get into books ! I have managed to get to the age of 49 (50 in Feb 2010) without fully reading a book. (when at school, if the book I had to read wasn't on at the pictures, I couldn't do a book reveiw !!) hence English wasnt my strongest subject at school. I am a regular listener to 4BC in Brisbane and have heard David many times on the radio. Last Saturday I picked up a copy of Davids book. I could not put it down, I was enthraled by it and finished it on Sunday !! A big first for me ! It just made sooo much sence. I have been about 25 kgs over weight for many years, yet I have always been very active, I have been a Rugby league Referee for 24 years yet I have been over weight for most of that time. I have tried every diet ever dreamed up and have lost weight from time to time but nothing dramatic.
I always last about 3-4 weeks then put it all back on. Ask me any question you like about Weight Watchers, Low carb, Lite and Eay, Scrasdale, Atkins, Vege soup diet, Body Trim and many many more I have tried the lot. (David is correct Low carb does work but not sustainable long term.)
I am now 1 week into NOT being on a diet !!!!!! But I am sugar free and feel great (lost 2 kg) What I like is there is NO guilt !
But when Davids book said beer has no fructose, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Show me any diet, lifestyle program that belives Beer is ok ! Thank you thank you David. No Im not a big drinker but any male that enjoys a beer will tell you not being able to drink beer at functions and socially is a permanant reminder that you are on a diet.
One question David, on this forum, you and others talk about 10g of sugar per day. Yet on Page 3 of the book you say 10g per meal. can you please clear this up.
After trying every possible method to loose weight, I had convinced myself that I wasn't fat, just short. If i was 9 foot tall I would be the correct weight.
1 week not being on a diet, many many more to come.
I say, Vote One, David Gillespie for PM, or at least Minister for Fructose
Thanks David
I will keep you posted on my progress of not being on a diet.
Great story! ... Like Koboli - I love reading people's stories. Well done on the weightloss so far (and getting through the whole book).
Re the 10g - oh dear that is a bit sloppy of me (will make a note to clarrify in the next reprint) ... On page 3 I say 10g of 'sugar' per meal and later I say 10g of fructose per day ... By my cavalier treatment of such numbers you will gather that I never actually measured it. The message I am trying to get across (in very sloppy fashion) is aim for 0g ... but since that isn't going to happen, the amount of fructose in two pieces of fruit appears likely to be safe (that's about 8-14g of fructose or 16-28g of sugar) per day (as long as you consume the fibre as well).
Personally, I now avoid fruit altogether (veges have way more fibre and less fructose) and try very hard to aim for 0g of fructose per day. That being said, I think you can safely consume at the levels I say above. Try it - if eating that much keeps you addicted to sugar (you still have cravings) then you need to ratchet it down. If on the other hand you can eat that much and not be addicted to sugar (you don't find yourself seeking it out) then go ahead and continue eating it at that level.

Great story Mark - I can relate to all you say (except I am female!) - not least of all being able to have a drink - it makes such a difference not having to say "I am trying a new diet etc" - again and again and yet again!!!! I am sure my friends see me as "the boy who cried wolf" (or should that be "the girl who tried diet").......
I am slightly ahead of you - been sugar aware for about 10 days - and have lost 2.5 kilos - fantastic... and I agree totally, its so easy - I am walking 'cos I enjoy it (live near the beach) and have found a very low or sugar free version of most things I like - except chocolate - there was some at work yesterday and oddly enough, I wasn't even interested.
While its too early to say this has changed my life I will certainly say it has changed my attitude!!! My book is winging its way to New Zealand as I write (just had a friend staying for a couple of days who has also always been on "the latest" fad and can see "the light". So now I am off to the bookshop to pick up another copy....
Keep it up - there is great support and a wealth of information in the forums!!!! Look forward to see how you are going.
And again, thanks to David for his hard work and this amazing revelation....... _________________ Ever the Optomist
Lost 3.5 kg so far and it has been so easy. I have noticed some amazing things already. Not being on a diet means that I dont do the "oh well, I've gone off track so I let my head go, and eat everything is sight" My fridge has stopped shaking when I walk past ! Going sugar free has only one downside, I do spend a lot of time shopping now looking at the sugar content of everything I pick up. I didn't realise that so many so called diet products are so full of sugar.
Thanks David, yes your reply did clear up the 10g of sugar per day issue, I am trying to reduce it to zero but being a lover of bread it is allmost impossible.
Thank you also for the other comments, this forum is a very helpfull tool.
I will continue to keep you updated on my progress. In a couple of weeks I hope to be able to get on the scales without them shouting at me "ooohhhh get off, your too heavy"
Thanks again David for your wonderfull book (reading it again)
Great story and great results. On the bread note i have Country Life Country Grain & Organic Rye Bread @ 0.1% which is unbelieveable. The bread is great tasting too . Bloody expensive (around $5.50) but I find I dont crave bread as much and really enjoy this stuff
